19. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Spooky Season continues! Kayla and Taylor discuss the themes and major beats of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s 2020 novel Mexican Gothic. Topics include femininity, 1950s outfits, and MUSHROOMS! Mushrooms everywhere!
This week’s drink: Black Widow Smash via Half-Baked Harvest
INGREDIENTS
8 fresh blackberries, plus more for topping
1-2 tsp fresh rosemary, plus a sprig for serving
Juice from half a lemon
1-2 TB honey
1 ½ - 2 oz tequila or Mezcal
Couple dashes orange bitters
Sparkling water, for topping
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. In a cocktail shaker or glass jar, add blackberries, rosemary, lemon juice and honey. Muddle all of the ingredients together, squishing everything to release the juices. Add the tequila and orange bitters.
  2. Add ice to your glass and strain the drink over the ice. Top the glass with a little more ice, pour the sparkling water over, and gently stir to combine. Garnish with fresh rosemary. DRINK!

Pocket Full of Green via Hendrick’s Gin
INGREDIENTS
50ml Hendrick’s gin
8-12 mint leaves
30ml cucumber juice
20ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
35ml aloe vera juice
30ml soda water
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Add gin, cucumber and lemon juice along with mint into a glass and gently muddle until a pulpy consistency
  2. Add plenty of cracked ice and churn
  3. Add aloe vera juice, soda, and stir
  4. Add more crushed ice, building into a stack
  5. Garnish with cucumber and mint
