43. The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende Part 1

In this week’s episode, Kayla and Taylor discuss the first half of Isabel Allende’s 1985 novel The House of the Spirits. Topics include magical realism, Male Rage, and the plethora of interesting characters we meet in this family saga.
This week’s drink: Isabel Allende via Stylist
INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 oz port wine
  • 1 oz whisky
  • 1 egg yolk (very fresh)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Dash Angostura bitters
  • Cinnamon sugar (to top)
  • Cocoa powder (to top)
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Whisk together until completely blended. Pour into a glass over a generous amount of ice. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and cocoa powder.

Pisco Sour via liquor.com
INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 oz pisco
  • 1 oz lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • Garnish: Angostura bitters
INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Add pisco, lime juice, simple syrup and egg white into a shaker and dry-shake (without ice) vigorously.
  2. Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. (Alternatively, you can strain it into a rocks glass over fresh ice.)
  4. Garnish with 3 to 5 drops of Angostura bitters. Using a straw, toothpick or similar implement, swirl the bitters into a simple design, if desired.
